Maxx has somewhat of a rags-riches story. We went to buy a bluetick bitch from a man we soon found out was basically a dog trader that turned dogs around almost daily. We decided to buy the bitch, but I told the man he would have to throw in the blocky-headed male in the end kennel in the deal. He balked at first, trying to tell me what a fine rabbit dog Maxx was, but I told him the dog would be dead in less than a week if he stayed there and he relented. Maxx was eaten up with mange - his tail looked like a rat's tail and no hair on his legs or paws, and was heartworm positive.. He was also the most man-shy dog I'd ever encountered in my life.
I can only assume he'd been not only neglected, but badly mis-treated, too. Ralph tried to tell me I didn't want "that dog" but I persisted. There was just something about him - I had a gut feeling that inside this pitiful shell was a proud dog. Maybe it was the way he carried his head. I would clean him up, get him healthy, and we'd put him in the field to see what he had. We did, and we found out that Maxx was an entirely different dog the minute you snapped a lead on. His head and tail held high, he would run a rabbit with class and style. He was always ready to go hunting and was never a problem to catch in the field. It was 18 months later before Maxx would take his first step to approach me on his own accord. I had gotten him out of a couple of scrapes and he began to trust me. Shortly after he began to trust Ralph, too. Once he let down the wall, he was outgoing and big-hearted - kind to other dogs, especially little puppies, and loved the physical affection and would stand on my knee for his daily ear-scratchin's..
Maxx was an excellent gun dog, never bothered any off-game, and had an extremely correct mouth so we decided to enter him in some Progressive Pack trials which would favor his medium speed, flawless style of running. He had come this far and I wanted him to get a chance at some recognition for his talent. The strangers at the trials made him very nervous, but he wanted to run so bad, he'd push aside the fear and perform to his best......(as long as he knew I was in the gallery). In his total field trial career, Maxx has only drawn 2 minuses. Maxx placed in almost every trial he entered and in December of 2002, he passed his certification for Progressive Pack Rabbit Champion. He's still a little picky about who he allows to handle him and he will warn you to that fact, but all who know him and have seen him run will tell you that he has the courage of a lion to overcome his personal obstacles. Of all the hounds in our kennel, I think I'm most proud of Maxx. He's living proof that when one posseses great heart, a pauper can still become a king.
Dec. 2002 - PP Judge Randy Beavers, the judge that handled Maxx at his certification proudly brings Maxx out of the woods. I believe Randy was as happy for Maxx as I was!
