| Ol' Jack, a bluetick, was one of our first gundogs when we formed our hunting pack back in 1996. He is a high side of medium speed hound with a long low, loud gravely bawl mouth. When we first started field trialing, Jack and a few others in our hunting pack was all we had to trial with. Although Jack comes from top-notch UBGF breeding, he managed to snag a few trophies in ARHA Little Pack on those days when cover and concentration to line was necessary. He even qualified to run the ARHA LP World hunt that first year and only lost his cast by a dime. As a hunting hound, you couldn't want any more. He hunts with you, handles like a dream, and will not touch anything but rabbit. He won't even look up for a house cat. To our knowledge he's never worn a shock collar. Ol' Jack has gotten kinda blase about killed rabbits. He doesn't have to run over and check them out anymore. When he hears a shot, he'll pop his head up out of the brush and look your way. If you say nothing, he goes back to the line. If you holler "Dead Rabbit!", Ol' Jack will pull off and go find another one. Jack turned 13 years old Sept. 2004 and although he's no longer breeding, he's still a spry feller, will hunt as long as you care to stand out in the weather, jumps creeks and ditches like a 4-year-old. His litters all started by 6 months and I believe you could have bred him to a cocker spaniel and gotten rabbit dogs. He was a very pre-potent sire. We stopped feeding Jack regular feed this year and put him on Hill's Science Diet for Seniors with Gucosamine & Chondroitin (for old joints) and it seems to keep him very healthy and flexible. Jack is a true Alpha Male and has not relinquished this title to any of the other 8 grown males in our kennel yet. He considers his ratty, old dog house to be the yard 'castle', and refuses to sleep in one of the newer dog houses. We keep patching it for him, ha! ha! |
